It's just counterproductive to speak of _Russia's_ war against Ukraine. We can clearly see that Putin is waging war, and we can only speculate about what Russians would do if they were informed and had a choice. It's so much more constructive if we leave a golden bridge for ordinary Russians, of which definitely many are opposed to Putin's war. Otherwise we only needlessly feed the narrative that the west is out to destroy Russia. For the sake of encouraging Russia's opposition to the invasion, we should leave the question about the will of the Russian people open, and speak of Putin's war only.

I am curious. Would a better term here be "patriotism"? In common parlance "nationalism" implies dominance of one's country at the expense of all others, a very "for me to win everyone else must lose, we cannot win if everyone wins" mindset. In order for one to succeed, you must injure all others to the point of their failure. "Patriotism" is much more along the lines of what you discuss here - the idea that you may haveto sacrifice for your country to succeed, but it does not require injury to others who may be uninvolved, and certainly not to friends and neighbors. I'll have to chew on this angle of nationalism and see if I can find other examples.

People are desperate to leave the country. The politics and other issues are very depressing. He went to Russia not to fight physically in the war but to help with logistics.
